Keeping Chickens With Grandma
63Grandma and Her Chickens
Grandma has been keeping chickens for years. She grew up on a farm in Alabama and they always had flock of chickens.
Grandma is now 87 years old and has not only raised chickens but also raised 9 children of her own, has 9 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
I'm one of her children and decided to put all her chicken keeping knowledge together. We made the first and only "Online Video Chicken Keeping Course" that I know of. It's got videos and bunches of other homey good old chicken raising information. It's a lot more fun than reading a book about raising chickens!
Below is just a fun little 30 second video with some pictures in it. Our videos in our course are up to 45 minutes long each and go into details on chicken keeping. What we couldn't fit into videos, we created PDF files with loads of information and links to get free chicken coop plans, chicken breed comparison charts, etc.
Currently, Grandma lives in Tennessee in the city and has a flock of New Hampshire Reds in her big back yard. When the great grand kids come over, little 2 year old Garrat tells Grandma he "needs to chase the chickens". Not wants to mind you, but "needs" to. He's so funny!
Kids love chickens. One of my earliest memories of chickens was when I was probably 5 or 6 years old and I had little chicks running around me as I sat on the ground. I remember this one little chick kept pecking a big freckle I had on my leg. Isn't it funny how certain memories seem to stick in your head!
Nesting Boxes
Above are a couple of nesting boxes in the coop. As you can see the New Hampshire Reds lay a nice large brown egg. They are great layers, giving almost an egg every day. Of course how many eggs your chickens lay has a lot to do with the nutrition your chickens get.
